THE SHARING ECONOMY
Implementing Article 25 in the Twenty-First Century This edition is not a complete translation of the 2018 Slovenian book Ekonomija delitve: uresničitev 25. člena v 21. stoletju. It is an abridged and revised English edition prepared for electronic publication. Several sections have been shortened, reorganised, updated, or stylistically revised, and a number of new texts have been added. The central argument of the original work has nevertheless been preserved: the implementation of Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides the foundation for the development of the sharing economy in the twenty-first century. By ensuring universal access to the essential goods required for a life of dignity, the sharing economy offers a practical means of translating the principles of Article 25 into economic and social reality. During the translation process, it became clear that some additional content and changes were necessary. Consequently, the text you see before you is not only a translation but also stands as an independent book in its own right.
The sharing economy aims to meet everyone’s basic needs and enhance human well-being while protecting the environment. If the focus shifts away from these goals—such as towards profit-seeking or accumulating wealth—it can no longer be regarded as the genuine sharing economy. We humans are one big family—one humanity—sharing a common home: planet Earth. That is why the sharing economy represents not just an economic model, but a way of living together and managing our relationships. Only by sharing resources for the benefit of all can we establish right human relations, grounded in compassion and love. Through sharing, we will transform both the world and ourselves. We have studied the possibility of establishing a mechanism for the global sharing of basic goods that would eliminate, or at least ease, many of the most significant problems of the modern world – hunger, extreme poverty and inequality, which together leads to social conflicts, wars, migration and the environmental crisis.
The global sharing of basic goods and caring for the commons of humanity is the foundation upon which we can build peace, prosperity and a viable future for all. If we want to live as One humanity, in peace and wellbeing on our common Earth, then the only way to achieve this urgent objective is through the principle of sharing. Every year in November and December, during the so-called holiday season, we enter into a phase of unbridled consumerism. Although this period is marked by two festive holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas - we have completely lost their essential messages of generosity and unselfish love. Through the fake glare of consumerism, we have even turned these messages into their opposite. Let’s not deceive ourselves, for in reality we glorify extreme selfishness and gross materialism.
